There are big differences between financial planners, brokers and portfolio managers, particularly in education and compensation. Portfolio managers must have a higher level of education and more experience because they can manage your investments on a discretionary basis. Portfolio managers earn their revenues from fees charged on your total investment portfolio, not commissions or transaction related fees.
